Let’s talk about my Gibson Long Cocobolo PC. I recently purchased from Pipeline Bagpipes https://pipeline-bagpipes.com.
This practice chanter is a real beauty. It has a great tone and volume, and it looks really nice too. The note hole spacing is essentially the same as most bagpipe chanters, with the holes being counter sunk they are easy for your fingers to find. The ferrule seems to be made of stainless steel, and the top, or reed cover, is poly, which means it won’t crack.
I tried out a Pro-Flow reed and a Black Abbott reed, and both worked great. The Pro-Flow was a bit easier to blow and had a bit less volume, but the Abbott made for some really nice and well-defined grips and birls.
One thing I noticed right away and really liked about the Gibson was how comfortable it felt in my hand. The reed cover is a bit smaller in diameter, and the mouthpiece is 1 3/4” shorter than my Kintyre, so it was perfect for my 5’ 9” frame while I was sitting at my desk playing.
This practice chanter is definitely going to be a keeper for me. Ron.
